Chanchal ji, whose birth name is Narinder, almost reminisce the life
of Swami Vivekananda, known in his childhood, as Narendra, and following
the life of the Swami, has become the great devotee of Mother Durga.
As an interesting anecdote has it, Narinder was very mischievous as
a student. His Hindi teacher has therefore called him, Chanchal (fickle)
noting his temperament. Later, Narinder adopted this name and has been
known as Chanchal ever since.
Narinder was born on Oct 16th to a highly religious Punjabi family in
Namak Mandi, Amritsar in Punjab, India. Like many great men in history,
he was also inspired by his mother, who was an ardent devotee of Mother
Durga and learnt singing Bhajans and performing aarti from the very
childhood. He started taking part in many devotional and cultural activities
in the village, and his father also encouraged him in pursuing his interest.
An accomplished poet and writer, Chanchalji’s writings were published
in several Hindi Newspapers and magazines. He learnt music under the
tutelage of Sri Prem Trikha, a well known musician of Amritsar. His
life is a saga of dedication to music and he pursued his dream of singing
to the glory of Goddess Durga. And the story continues. He moves from
country to country, from India to U.S.A., U.K. and Canada, wherever
the devotees of Mother are present and are eager to listen to his melodious
voice full of serene wisdom and full of devotion. In fact Chanchalji
just kicked off his world tour at Princeton, New Jersey on June 18 in
the presence of over 4500 people, who had gathered to hear him sing
to the glory of the Mother. He will be visiting many cities in the U.S.A.
before embarking to other countries overseas.
Narinder Chanchal also had a stint in the film career, when he came
in contact with Raj Kapoor, a doyen of Hindi filmdom. Raj kapoor was
greatly impressed with his voice and asked him to sing for his film,
Bobby. His rendition in the movie became so popular, his fame spread
across the globe, wherever Indians lived. He however did not want to
pursue film career, and pursued his self-inspired service of Goddess
Durga, and kept on singing to the glory of the Mother and inspiring
the devotees.
In 1973 he was honored with “Filmfare Award” for best Male
Playback Singer for the excellence in singing “Beshak Mandir Masjid
Todo” in the film Bobby. Naturally, citations and awards came
with the fame and popularity, but his life remained an oasis of love
and devotion to inspire all those who seek the blessings of the Mother.
Recently the Governor of Atlanta also awarded him with the “Honorary
Citizenship” of the State of Georgia.
